Back-to-school sales: THIS is the week to shop!

Usually the stores have the really good deals at the end of July and at the beginning of August but this year they waited until mid-August to post their REALLY good deals. Here’s my picks. Remember, Walmart and Target WILL match other stores weekly circulars so save yourself a trip and shop at one of those two stores for the best deals! Also, keep in mind stores will NOT match store brands, b1g1 or percentage off.

From my sons’ elementary lists:

3 – pair scissors
7 – pink erasers
16 – glue sticks
8 dozen – Ticonderoga pencils
3 – 24 count box of crayons
2 – Twistables colored pencils
6 – folders with bottom pocket
4 – spiral notebooks (wide ruled)
3 – large box of Kleenex
3 – container of disinfecting wipes
2 – pencil box to hold supplies in desk
1 – pkg. colored pencils
1 – medium size bottle of Elmer’s glue
4 – red correcting pens
1 – pkg. of wide-ruled binder paper
1 – pkg. colored markers
1 – black fine point Sharpie
3 ring binder (2-3 in.) with inside pockets (Zippered are best!)
10 binder divider tabs (Plastic ones are nice. They don’t tear out.)
Large, nylon, sturdy pencil pouch for binder (NO PENCIL BOXES)

My older children – who are in high school and middle school also will need composition notebooks, college ruled notebooks, rules, pens and pencils. From time to time they’ll also need markers, colored pencils and rulers as well as 3″ to 4″ binders. The eldest two girls will need a graphing calculator (each) for math. Those are pricey at around $100 each. If your child needs a scientific calculator at school you can pick one up at Walmart for $12.

Before I forget, in September keep an eye on clearances at Target. Last year I picked up the Kennewick store’s remaining color crayons for a penny each! I donated the vast majority to the school when I came across that deal. I also picked up index cards for 5 cents and scissors for a quarter.

I wasn’t impressed with what Target had on sale in their flier this week and hope next week they’ll drop their prices on notebook (1-subject). Last year I picked up several whole cases for under $4 a case.

Also, the Ticonderoga pencils can be found at Costco for under $8 for six boxes of 24… if I recall correctly. I haven’t bought any since last summer along with all the penny pencils. We’re running low on pencils so I’ll stock up on Ticonderoga and penny pencils.

Spicy ginger BBQ sauce

Saw this in a magazine. I LOVE ginger!

Ingredients:

Medium onion
Fresh ginger
Garlic
Vegetable oil
Dry rose or dry white wine
Ketchup
Cider vinegar
Packed brown sugar
Dijon mustard
Worcestershire
Salt
Pepper
Cayenne

Saute 1 chopped medium onion, 2 tbsp each chopped fresh ginger and chopped garlic, and 1½ tbsp vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat until soft, about 5 minutes. Add 1 cup dry rose or dry white wine, ½ cup ketchup, 3 tbsp each cider vinegar and packed brown sugar, 1 tbsp Dijon mustard, 1 tsp Worcestershire, ½ tsp each salt and pepper and 1/8 tsp cayenne. Simmer, stirring occasionally until very slightly thickened, 5 to 6 minutes. Let cool slightly, add 2 tbsp lemon juice then whirl in a blender until smooth. Makes 2½ cups.

Per ¼ cup: 83 cal, 25% (21 cal) from fat; 0.4 g protein; 2.5 g fat (0.2 sat); 10 g carbo (0.3 G fiber; 295 mg sodium; 0 mg chol.
